Training for Cub Scout Leaders

For a Cub Scout leader to be considered "trained" and to wear the Trained badge on his/her uniform, the leader must complete the following training:

Fast Start
Youth Protection Training
New Leader Essentials
Position Specific Training

In addition, Webelos leaders and others involved in the camping program are encouraged to take Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills.

Steps for Training

Fast Start Either watch the Fast Start video or do the on-line version. The video is about 30 minutes long and is available from the Scout Office and most Packs have copies. The on-line version is available on the scouting.org website - click here for that site.

Youth Protection Training Because of the great concern the Boy Scouts of America has for the problem of child abuse in our society, the Youth Protection program has been developed to help safeguard both our youth and adult members. Published and videotaped materials have been prepared to give professionals and volunteers information on the resources available for educating our membership about child abuse - how to avoid it, how to identify it, and how to deal with it. These materials and local council training programs are designed to give parents and their children basic information that will increase their awareness and sense of personal power to assist in their own self-protection. The on-line version is available on the scouting.org website - click here for that site.

New Leader Essentials This is a new course that highlights the values, aims, history, funding, and methods of Scouting. It addresses how these aims and methods are reached in an age-appropriate style with Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting and Venturing. Videos, discussion and hands-on reinforcement are presented during the 90-minute training session. Since this is a cross-program session, each leader completes New Leader Essentials training only once.

Position Specific Training This training provides the specialized knowledge a new leader needs to assume a leadership role. This training is approx. 2.5 hrs long. Although designed as five separate courses, the first portion is common to all Cub Scout positions, and then there is a break-out session for each specific leadership position. If your scouting position changes, you should take the next appropriate course. The courses are are as follows: Tiger Den Leader Specific: for leaders and parents of Tiger dens; Cub Den Leader Specific: for den leaders, asst den leaders, and parents; Webelos Den Leader Specific: for den leaders, asst den leaders and parents; Cubmaster Specific: for cubmasters, asst cubmasters, and others interested; Pack Committee Specific: for committee chairs and members, and parents.

Leader Knots Each adult leader can earn "training knots" based on the leader's position within Pack 1020, and completion of the abovementioned training courses is the first step.  Click here for details on Leader Knots.

Roundtable Meetings Meet with other Cub leaders at the GAD Roundtable. Click here for details on Cub Scout Roundtable.

Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) is a one-day course designed for those who organize and run Cub Scout camping events.  Pack 1020 encourages at least one adult from each Den to attend this training course.  Among other topics, this course covers the rules, guidelines, and safety considerations for "family camping" organized by the Pack and/or Den.  To get the most years of benefit, it is best to take this training in the Tiger or Wolf years. Click here for details.
